Gwinnett County maintains an online portal for open records requests from twenty-two different government agencies. An open records request, also called a public records request, is the process through which individuals or organizations can access government documents that are not considered confidential.

These records are made available through Freedom of Information Acts or Sunshine Laws. In Georgia, they are subject to the Georgia Open Records Act and the Georgia Open Meetings Act.

The online open records portal can be used to obtain records from government officers including those related to law enforcement and corrections, law, the tax commissioner and financial services, medical, fire and emergency, and human resources, and planning, development, transportation and water services, among others. Using the service requires creating an account, which allows the person making the request to track its progress. Different records are assigned different fees, which can be mailed to the Open Records Office.

County records that are not available through this portal include vital records (birth, death, and adoption records), marriage and divorce records, deeds and property liens, and records from the office of the Superior, State and Magistrate Court Clerk.

Birth, death, and marriage records are held by the Gwinnett County Probate Court. The court system does not accept electronic requests. Requests should be made by calling 770.822.825. Certified birth and death certificates cost $25 for the first copy and $5 per each additional copy. Request forms are available on the Probate Court’s website and may also be submitted by mail. Requests submitted by mail should include a clear copy of a photo ID, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and a check or money order made payable to Gwinnett County Probate Court. They should be addressed to:
